The Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is one of the streams under the Express Entry system, which is the primary pathway for skilled workers to immigrate to Canada. The FSWP is designed for foreign nationals with the skills, education, work experience, and language abilities required to contribute to Canada’s economy.

  1. Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, applicants must meet various requirements, including:
    • Have at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time work experience in a skilled occupation within the last ten years.
    • Possess sufficient language proficiency in English or French by taking a language test recognized by the Canadian government (IELTS for English and TEF for French).
    • Have obtained an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to prove that their foreign education credentials are equivalent to Canadian standards.
    • Score a minimum number of points on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which assesses factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability.
  2. Express Entry Profile: Interested candidates need to create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool of candidates. The CRS score is used to rank candidates in the pool, and those with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residency through regular draws conducted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  3. Selection Factors: The FSWP uses a points-based system to assess candidates based on various selection factors, including:
    • Age
    • Education
    • Work Experience
    • Language proficiency in English and/or French
    • Arranged employment in Canada
    • Adaptability factors (such as previous work or study experience in Canada, or having close relatives living in Canada)
  4. Job Offer: While a job offer is not required to be eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, having a valid job offer from a Canadian employer can significantly increase a candidate’s CRS score and improve their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.
  5. Processing Time and Permanent Residency: Once an ITA is issued, candidates have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residency. If the application is approved, candidates and their accompanying family members are granted permanent resident status, allowing them to live, work, and study anywhere in Canada.
